🎬 Movie Review: “Elio” — A Cosmic Lesson on Connection
As parents, we know how hard it is to juggle everything — work, responsibilities, and trying to stay present for our kids in a fast-paced world. Sometimes, the messages we try to send get lost in translation, and other times, we forget how powerful simply showing up can be.
Enter Elio, Pixar’s newest original feature film that takes this everyday struggle and launches it into the stars — literally.
A Story About a Boy Who Wants to Belong
Elio introduces us to 11-year-old Elio Solis, a space-loving kid who’s more comfortable daydreaming about aliens than facing the challenges of fitting in here on Earth. Voiced by Filipino-American Yonas Kibreab, Elio is quirky, sensitive, and awkward — the kind of kid who often gets overlooked, misunderstood, or brushed off.

But when aliens mistakenly abduct him and appoint him as Earth’s official ambassador to the “Communiverse” (an interplanetary alliance), Elio is suddenly thrust into a galaxy of strange beings, unexpected adventures, and big responsibilities. As he navigates alien politics, misunderstandings, and universal chaos, he also embarks on a deeper journey: learning who he is, and what it really means to communicate.
What Makes Elio Special?
From the outside, Elio looks like a fun sci-fi animation. And it is — the visuals are stunning, the humor is on-point, and the alien designs are wildly imaginative. But the film’s real magic lies in its emotional core.
Elio’s relationship with his guardian, Aunt Olga (voiced by Zoe Saldaña), is one of the film’s most poignant elements. A Major in the Air Force and a would-be astronaut, Olga is firm but loving — a woman trying to prepare Elio for life while quietly wishing he’d just see her. Their dynamic reflects the struggle many parents face: the desire to guide our children, while still making space for their individuality.
It’s a powerful reminder that presence is more than just being in the same room. It’s about listening, making space, and meeting them where they are — even when we don’t fully understand their world.
A Cosmic Friendship That Teaches Acceptance
One of the most heartwarming parts of the film is Elio’s budding friendship with Glordon, the soft-spoken son of a fearsome alien warlord. Glordon is goofy, gentle, and just as misunderstood as Elio. Their connection is awkward and unexpected — but real.
Through Glordon, Elio learns that you don’t have to change who you are to be loved or accepted. And isn’t that the lesson we all want our kids to carry with them?
Lessons for Parents and Kids Alike
More than just a coming-of-age story, Elio teaches powerful values:
- ✨ The importance of communication — even when it’s hard.
- 🧠 The beauty of being fully present — especially for our kids.
- 🫶 The value of listening without judgment.
- 🤝 That acceptance — both of others and ourselves — can be life-changing.
It’s a great conversation starter for families. Whether you’re raising young dreamers, teens finding their identity, or you just want to remind yourself why showing up matters, Elio will speak to you.
Final Thoughts: Why You Should Watch Elio
Directed by Academy Award® winner Domee Shi (Bao) and co-directed by Adrian Molina (Coco), Elio is one of those rare animated films that feels whimsical and wise at the same time. It’s fun enough for kids, deep enough for adults, and emotional enough to stick with you long after the credits roll.
So if you’re planning a family movie night, Elio is a perfect pick. Bring the popcorn, keep the tissues close, and get ready to laugh, reflect, and maybe even tear up a little.
🎟 Disney and Pixar’s Elio lands in Philippine cinemas this June 18, 2025.
