Why More Filipinos Are Turning to Digital Mental Health Support
Mental health is one of those things many Filipinos still find difficult to talk about.
We often hear phrases like “Kaya mo yan,” “Magpakatatag ka,” or “Lilipas din yan.” While these words are usually well-intentioned, they can sometimes make people feel like they need to carry their struggles alone.
The reality is that many people who seem okay on the outside may be silently dealing with stress, anxiety, burnout, or emotional challenges behind closed doors.
Unfortunately, mental health stigma remains a major barrier to seeking help in the Philippines. Many people worry about being judged, misunderstood, or seen differently if they admit they are struggling. Cultural values such as hiya and pakikisama can make it even harder to open up, especially when people fear becoming a burden to their families or colleagues.
In the workplace, the challenge can be even greater. According to the International Labor Organization, around 75% of Filipinos believe that disclosing mental health concerns could negatively affect their professional opportunities—the highest rate among ASEAN countries.
Then there’s the issue of accessibility. For many Filipinos, professional mental health support can feel expensive or difficult to access.
This is where digital healthcare platform mWell hopes to make a difference.
Making Mental Health Support More Accessible
According to Chaye Cabal-Revilla, President and CEO of mWell and Chief Finance, Risk, and Sustainability Officer of MPIC, mental health deserves the same attention as physical health.
“Mind health is just as important as physical health, and yet for so many Filipinos, asking for help still feels out of reach — whether because of stigma, cost, or simply not knowing where to turn. True well-being cannot exist without both,” she said.
“At mWell, we are committed to making sure that every Filipino has a place to turn to, for their body and for their mind, because a healthier Filipino is a stronger Filipino. We want every person to know that support is there for them, whenever they are ready, and that taking care of their mind is one of the most courageous things they can do for themselves.”
One thing I appreciate about digital health platforms is that they allow people to take the first step privately and at their own pace. Sometimes, simply checking in with yourself can be the hardest part.
Starting Small: Checking In With Yourself
Available through the mWell app, the Mind Health Score gives users a simple way to assess their emotional well-being using the scientifically validated WHO-5 Well-Being Index.
For those who may not be ready to speak with a professional yet, the platform also offers self-guided modules designed to help users manage stress, improve resilience, and build healthier coping habits.
It’s a practical starting point for anyone who wants to better understand how they’re feeling without pressure or judgment.
Professional Help Within Reach
When users are ready to talk to someone, mWell also offers access to certified mental health professionals.
Its Mind Healthsavers Plan includes a 30-minute video session with a certified Mind Health Coach that can be used within 30 days of purchase.
For those who need additional support, the platform also provides scheduled and on-demand consultations with mental health coaches, psychologists, and psychiatrists. Services start at P499, making professional support more accessible to more Filipinos.
Expanding Access Through Partnerships
To further strengthen its mental health services, mWell has partnered with MindNation, a global mental health and well-being organization.
The collaboration expands mWell’s network of certified specialists, helping connect more Filipinos with qualified and culturally sensitive mental health support.
“At MindNation, we have always believed that mental health support should be something every person can reach, not a privilege reserved for the few,” said Eizaleen Fusingan-Lappay, Chief WellBeing Officer of MindNation.
“Partnering with mWell brings us closer to that vision, expanding the number of qualified, compassionate specialists available to Filipinos when and where they need them most. Together, we are not just adding names to a roster. We are building a stronger, more accessible safety net for the nation’s well-being.”
It’s Okay to Ask for Help
Mental health conversations in the Philippines are slowly changing. More people are beginning to recognize that asking for help is not a sign of weakness but an important part of taking care of ourselves.
Whether it’s stress from work, parenting challenges, burnout, anxiety, or simply feeling overwhelmed by everyday life, support is available.
Sometimes the first step is simply checking in with yourself.
And sometimes, that’s already a brave place to start.
