Turning Trash into Treasure: How Watsons and Local Artists Are Redefining Sustainability Through Art”

Watsons is stepping up its game in the local art scene, mixing creativity with sustainability in the coolest way possible. Last year, they made waves with the “Reuse with Watsons: A Sustainability Exhibit” at drybrush Gallery, showcasing art made from everyday trash like plastic bottles and packaging. These materials were all collected from Watsons’ Recycle for Rewards bins, and the results were nothing short of amazing.

Fast forward to this year, and Watsons is back with an even bigger and better event: the “Reimagine, Recycle for a Better Future” art competition. Held on August 8 at drybrush Gallery in SM Mall of Asia, the exhibit brought together 31 local artists who turned recycled plastics, paper, steel, and even Watsons product packaging into jaw-dropping works of art. Watsons is all about showing people how to make eco-friendly choices, and this event did just that.

“This art exhibit not only provides a platform for talented artists but also harnesses the power of art to drive meaningful change,” said Sharon Decapia, Senior AVP for Marketing, PR & Sustainability at Watsons. “We recognize art’s unique ability to inspire action and spark conversations about sustainability. Through this initiative, Watsons aims to encourage our customers to make recycling a regular part of their lives by showcasing innovative ways to transform waste into beautiful and functional items.”

The competition saw some seriously creative vibes, with the artists turning what some would call “trash” into pure gold. Noli Española took home the grand prize for his piece ‘Alay sa Inang Kalikasan,’ which gave new life to plastic packaging through a stunning mixed media creation. Runner-up Sven Wilbur Lim also wowed with ‘A Cinderella Story,’ a resin masterpiece. Both artists snagged cash prizes and a bunch of Watsons Sustainable Choices goodies.

“Partnering with Watsons for this event has been incredibly rewarding,” expressed Jojo Liao, founder of drybrush Gallery. “The diverse range of artworks created from recycled materials not only showcases the talent of our local artists but also highlights how creativity can drive progress in sustainability.”

The exhibit is running until August 16, 2024, drawing in everyone from art lovers to eco-warriors. And if you can’t make it in person, no worries—the whole thing’s also featured online on drybrush Gallery’s website. So, no matter where you are, you can check out these dope pieces.

Watsons isn’t stopping here. They’re still all in on sustainability, offering a wide variety of Sustainable Choices products that are not just better for you but also better for the planet.
