Having a healthy heart is key to overall wellness. Heart issues can take a massive toll on your health and can, in some cases, even be fatal. Thankfully, there are steps you can take towards strengthening your heart. This doesn’t always mean medication, either, although you should always consult with your doctor about the right options for you. Here are some ideas about natural ways to support heart health.

 

Take Supplements

Supplements can be a great way to strengthen your heart and add additional nutrients to your diet. There are many available on the market and you should do your research about which ones may be right for you. A daily multivitamin is always a good option, but did you know that there are supplements that can specifically target heart health? Fish Oil, Garlic, Green Tea and Magnesium are all thought to have cardiovascular benefits.

 

Try CBD

CBD, also known as Cannabidiol, is one of the ingredients in the marijuana plant. Unlike traditional forms of marijuana, however, it does not get users “high” because it does not have psychoactive properties. Instead, it has a multitude of health benefits, including cardiovascular ones. It is legal in all 50 states and easy to purchase at most stores. CBD capsules are a great option, while it is also available in pills, oils, tinctures, edibles, lotions and vape pens. CBD is good for heart health because it is anti-inflammatory and antioxidative, which reduces other conditions that lead to heart disease. For example, it can decrease your risk of high blood pressure, a common cause of cardiovascular problems. It also reduces the chances of having a stroke, which can be caused by heart issues.

 

Get Exercise

Regular exercise is an important part of keeping your heart strong and healthy. The CDC recommends that adults get 150 minutes of activity each week. You can break this up in whichever way is most convenient for you, whether that means a moderate amount of activity each day or a few more intense days of exercise. Above all, you should focus on aerobic activity and muscle-strengthening exercises. Aerobic activity is particularly good for heart health.

 

Quit Smoking

While smoking is bad for your health in general, it is particularly detrimental to your heart health. When you light up, your blood pressure and heart rate increase, which can ultimately lead to heart issues because of the cardiovascular strain. The chemicals in cigarettes are also bad for your heart. Carbon monoxide changes the texture of the tissue in your heart, making you more susceptible to a heart attack. Nicotine narrows your blood vessels, which makes your heart have to work harder. While it’s smart to never start smoking in the first place, it is never too late to quit. If quitting cold turkey is too difficult, try cutting back gradually or use one of the many available products on the market that help with smoking cessation.

 

Reduce Anxiety

Anxiety and stress can put you on the path to a serious heart condition. Try mindfulness to help you deal with any tension you may have. Even five to ten minutes per day of focusing on your breathing can make a big difference. Find a comfortable chair, sit down and keep bringing your attention back to your breath. You will reap the benefits of a less stressful life, both with your heart health and mental well-being.

 

Commit to a Heart-Healthy Diet

A heart-healthy diet consists of whole grains, fruits, fish, poultry, vegetables and other high-fiber foods. Avoid fat, cholesterol, red meat and sugary drinks. This may mean passing on the fast food and preparing more of your own meals.  Stay away from soda and keep hydrated throughout the day. Stick to one to two alcoholic drinks per day and enjoy caffeine in moderation.

Taking care of your heart will lead to overall happiness and wellness. Try a few of these tips and you will quickly see a difference.
