How I Landed My Dream Career Through Blogging

Hello there! Today I’ll be sharing with you a personal story on how I landed my dream job through blogging. Maybe you can find yours too? I am a writer. I always wanted to be one. I remember when I was 8 years old, writing random trivia I got from a book on sheets of paper, then placing it in front of the doorsteps of my neighbors calling it “news“. But life doesn’t always give us the life we choose because not everyone has the same opportunities.

I born in a slightly above-the-poverty-line family. We weren’t well-off, but my mom was able to put me through private school up until high school. Right after graduation, I already knew what course I wanted to take. Journalism. It was finally time to turn that dream into reality by applying for a course that can direct me to that. I passed the entrance exam in UST (University of Santo Tomas) and all I had to do was enroll. Unfortunately, things won’t be that easy.

Due to problems financially, they couldn’t enroll me in UST and it was too late for me to apply for a scholarship. Good thing I took exams in other universities and passed as well. I got in Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila on their Bachelor of Science in Computer Science course. It wasn’t way off-track. Besides writing, I was into web development and programming too. I was addicted to computers but it was more of a side-hobby than a career. But hey, what the heck.

Fast forward to 10 years, I graduated with flying colors, I got into great high-paying companies (HP, Accenture, Chevron), but deep inside my heart wasn’t happy. I mean, why would I be choosy? It’s hard to find a good job nowadays. I missed writing. So instead of dreaming about it. I told myself “Why not start a blog?“. Who needs to apply for news agencies when you can start your own thanks to modern technology.

With my IT background, I set-up my own blog, domain, and social media. Yes, this is the domain I chose. Kikaysikat. It’s a wordplay of my name Kat, the word Kikay which meant someone who’s into beauty, and Sikat which means popular. Funny right?

Fast forward again to a few more years and I earned more money through blogging and being an influencer than in an office. It came to a time when I had to quit one or the other because I can only do so much.

I quit my IT job and chose to blog.

Blogging led me to different opportunities, from travel, attending multiple PR events (which I miss so much), but most of all getting to meet different people and making new friends (really!)

I finally achieved my dream though it took a long time. Not only that, but it also landed me freelance work writing for news agencies, magazines, and a lot more. I was happy. I am happy 🙂

As cliche as this may sound, don’t be afraid to follow your heart. Go catch that dream. It’s never too late.
