The rest of the world is dead asleep. You glance at your watch and you see it is a few minutes after midnight. You turn to face the other side and tell yourself that you will soon fall back to sleep. After what seems like a lot of time, you look at your watch again, and it is a few minutes to 1 pm. You now being to get bothered why you can’t get back to sleep.
Well, there are a number of reasons why you can’t fall asleep again and there are millions of people going through that same situation. It is imperative to dig deep and find out why you are unable to get a good night rest. This is especially when you know you are not stressed or emotionally disturbed, and your mattress is still as good as new just like when you got it from Tuft & Needle mattress.
So, what exactly do you do when you can’t sleep at night? Here are a few suggestions for you should you ever find yourself in such a situation-:
Write down your thoughts
One of the reasons why some people find it difficult to fall asleep at night or can’t go back to sleep after waking up is when they are experiencing anxious thoughts. Whether or not you realize it, your mind is actively working and it can’t get the relaxation it needs to let you fall in sleep in peace. One way of dealing with such is to simply take a piece of paper and start writing what it is that is going through your mind at that particular mind. I usually write mine down on my BDJ Planner. Stressful or not, the act of transferring your thoughts to paper will be as if you are removing them from your mind, thus creating some sort of space in your brain. Once you do this, you may find it easy to fall asleep or get back to sleep if you were woken up in the middle of the night.
Get plenty of aerobic exercises
If you find it a challenge to fall asleep most of the times, then it would be a good idea to increase your daily dose of aerobic exercises. Recent studies suggest that there exist strong correlations between engaging in regular aerobic exercises and falling asleep and having a good night’s rest. This does not mean that you need to run the marathon every day, but by just engaging in aerobic exercise for between twenty and thirty minutes every day, you will notice a tremendous improvement when bedtime comes. You can think about engaging in exercises such as running, walking briskly, biking and swimming. Or you can just hit the gym and sweat it out for at least one hour every day.
However, you must be careful to not indulge in such exercises when your bedtime is nearing. This is because your heart rate and body temperature may go up and instead of you falling asleep quickly, you may find yourself struggling to get that sleep.
Turn on the TV
This may sound contrary to advice given by experts regarding sleep, but when you find yourself awake in the middle of the night, turning to the television may actually help you get to sleep. It is common for people to fall asleep when watching TV during the day, so it should be easy for the TV to help you get back to bed at night. The best way to have effective results with this is not to watch your favorite shows that you will be immediately interested in and be tempted to follow along. Such will make you stay awake for a little longer. The best would be to choose shows or movies you wouldn’t naturally watch or the ones you don’t like very much, then try to force yourself to follow along. In no minute, you are going to get bored and before you realize it, you will be sound asleep. Just be sure to keep the volume low or when you feel that you are dozing off, just switch it off and go back to sleep.
Read Apple’s Terms and Conditions on your iPhone
Did you take time to read Apple’s T&Cs when you first started using their products? Chances are that you just agreed without even reading past the first sentence. This is a perfect distraction when you find that you can’t fall asleep at night. Just try reading everything written on the terms and conditions and you will be surprised at how fast you will fall asleep.
Grab a late night snack
Going to bed on a full stomach is never encouraged or going to bed immediately after a meal. However, it is also not recommended to go to bed on empty stomach, and this is one of the reasons why some people find that they can’t sleep at night. Perhaps you got jerked from your sleep because you were hungry. If you find yourself awake in the middle of the night and you are feeling hungry, grab some late night snack to wade off the hunger so that you can go back to sleep. However, be careful with what you eat since you might as well ruin entire sleep by taking the wrong foods. In brief, don’t take any caffeine, steak, chocolate, alcohol, leafy greens or fatty foods.
Read a book
Reading is another nice distraction to consider when you find that you can’t fall asleep at night. Just like with the watching the television or movies during such times, don’t choose a read you love since you may get your brain interested and this may further make it difficult for you to fall asleep. Choose things you wouldn’t normally consider reading or things not related to the niches you are interested. They should be boring so that you feel asleep the moment you start reading them. With the advent of the internet, there is so much you can decide to read to help you fall asleep in no time.
