Cisco certifications are among the most popular credentials for IT professionals. These certifications are designed to accommodate specialists with different levels of expertise. The lowest level that is targeted at beginners is the entry level. It is followed by an associate (CCNA or CCDA), professional (CCNP or CCDP), exert (CCIE and CCDE), and architect (CCAr) credentials. As the candidate progresses higher through the program, the difficulty of the tests gradually increases.
The associate level offers credentials for growing individuals. One of the most popular paths on this level is Routing and Switching (R&S), which is our focus in this paper.
The CCNA R&S Certification
To obtain the CCNA R&S certification, one can do either of the following:
- Take two exams, namely 100-105 ICND1 exam and 200-105 ICND2 exam.
- Take one composite exam, namely 200-125 CCNA exam.
In general, the exam topics for both options are the same. Further details on 200-105 CCNA exam are outlined below:
200-125 CCNA Exam
This exam is only associated with the CCNA R&S certification and is available in the English and Japanese languages. During this test, candidates are expected to complete about 60-70 questions in 90 minutes. See below some of the areas covered by this exam.

The following are the types of questions a candidate should expect to find in CCNA 200-125 exam:
- Multiple-choice Questions
This question type requires you to select the correct answer(s) from the options provided. It can be a multiple-choice question with single answer in which only one option should be selected or multiple-choice question with multiple answers where you should select more than one answer as specified by the question.
To select a single answer, you should click on the button beside the option of your choice, while selecting multiple answers involves checking small boxes beside the options you have chosen.
- Drag-and-drop Questions
This requires you to choose an option and drag it to an appropriate zone. The number of options and the number of drop zones are not necessarily the same. Sometimes, there can be more options than drop zones or more drop zones than the options.
- Fill-in-the-blank Questions
It requires that you type your answer into a text box. The text box is activated by clicking on it. Then, you can type your answer. The case you use does not matter unless the command you type is case-sensitive.
It is a scenario-based question type. It consists of the description of a scenario and multiple-choice questions based on the information contained in the scenario. Its window has two panes. The upper pane contains the scenario description, while the lower pane contains multiple-choice questions.
It involves router simulations. Its top window has the problem statement which gives you the task to perform and the information necessary to solve the problem. The navigation window is situated on the left. It contains the information you will need to navigate through the task. Here you will find information on how to access the router, how to close windows and how to move from window to window. The main window is the largest and it contains the router topology thus enabling you to see how the network is configured. By clicking on a host that has a serial console cable attached to it, a router interface will open. It is in this router interface that you will now complete the task. For simulation, the functionalities may not match the functionality of an actual router, but you will be able to complete the task with available commands.
This task involves simulations. The top area contains the questions which are numbered. You can move to a question you want to answer by simply clicking on its number. The navigation bar on the left contains information needed to successfully navigate through the task. The main window displays a topology that shows how the network is configured. You can access the router interface from here by clicking on a host that has a serial console cable attached to it. This cable is shown by a dotted line.In general, simlets resemble simulations.
